Active Ingredient: NICOTINE

QTc Interval Status:

Clinical Description (Database Summary)

(Hérité de NICOPASS 1) Nicotine acts as a direct, non-specific blocker of multiple cardiac potassium channels, including the hERG channel (IKr), Ito, and IK1 in Xenopus oocytes models. Electronic cigarette consumption is also associated with a prolonged QT interval. However, smoking cessation leads to a reduction in the rate-corrected QT (QTc) interval. Importantly, studies show that these electrocardiographic improvements are safely maintained during the subsequent use of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT). This suggests that NRT does not negate the repolarization benefits gained from quitting smoking.
